Bayardo San Roman
||
|| Role in Plot
||
Bayardo San Roman is the fiancé of Angela Vicario. He is initially introduced into the novel as a man with a slim waist and golden eyes. Because Bayardo comes from a prestigious and wealthy family, the Vicario family highly encourages the match between him and Angela, although Angela herself does not like Bayardo to begin with. At first, Bayardo attempts to woo Angela by buying her elaborate gifts. When Angela finally agrees to the marriage, Bayardo tries hard to make the wedding a magnificent one. It is Bayardo, right after the wedding, who discovers that Angela is not a virgin. He does not make a big fuss about it and merely tells Pura Vicario (Angela’s mother) the news and then quietly retreats. In this sense, Bayardo is somewhat responsible for both Angela and Santiago’s misfortunes because it is he who first reveals Angela’s secret, although at the time, he does not know who actually takes Angela’s virginity. Afterwards, he and Angela separate only to have him return to her 27 years later with a package of unopened love letters that she wrote to him.

|| Significance of Name in Work
|| Bayardo: contains the word “Bayard” which has 2 very different interpretations. 1) “A blind, clownish fellow.” However, Bayardo San Roman does not seem to obviously possess any of these traits in the novel. 2) Bayard was also the name of a chivalric bay horse in Italian/French literature that was known for his remarkable spirit. In a sense, Bayardo is chivalric because although he discovers his own wife is not a virgin, he does not attempt to harm her in any way and instead, plainly tells others the truth of the situation. Even though he probably realizes that the news of Angela’s loss of virginity will probably dent his own reputation, he does not strike and shows no obviousanger - even if he is living in a society which values honor so highly. However,he does get drunk.San Roman: is a province in Peru. Bayardo’s last name probably indicates or somewhat relates to where his family originated from.
